Everyone is asking, “What is happening to the song recital?” Even the greatest singers in the world are having difficulty booking recitals, and everyone is wondering if the amazing song repertoire will soon fade out of memory.
It’s very simple. Song recitals are fading out because... they’re BORING!! Why go watch someone sing fine-tuned songs in a foreign language, when you can go to the movies and watch some hunk save humanity from aliens?? Heck, even I’m torn over how to spend a Friday night!
This is why I have created a series of song recital programs that might not be accepted by the traditional conservatory peanut gallery but are entertaining and exciting in a contemporary context.
The most important characteristic of these recitals is breaking down the imaginary fourth wall which separates singer and spectator. My recitals incorporate a mixture of stories, humor, and song history to draw audience members into a personal interest of the music.
Finally, each recital closes with a set of Broadway tunes. This breaks up the academic-like structure that audience members might suddenly recognize halfway through the program. I often also include one or two numbers that involve the audience, either through a sing-along, or a name-that-song challenge.
